I leave my computer on 24/7 but we had a black out today. Just got home and it won't start. Goes through the usual start up but before windows start the screen just goes black but you can see the mouse cursor.
It wants to do a disk scan, I press ok, same thing happens above.
Then I tried to boot in safe mode which works fine and then restarted computer in normal mode same problem as above but it says cannot open volume for direct access when I try to run a disk scan on start up.
If I try to start comp without running disk check same problem as the start.
My question is...help me please!!!
Second question...what can I do in safe mode to try and find and fix this problem. This poor old clunker has had a hard life!!!
Hiya AB, sounds like you have lost startup files...........The fix: If its a laptop, remove hard-drive, keep hard-drive, then bash-burn-bury laptop. buy a new one and externally connect HDD to gain access to files.
If you have a newish desktop computer: remove hard-drive, and install a new HDD, format and load windows. Once again externally access your old HDD via cable and gain access to your old files.
If its an old desktop computer: bash-burn-bury

AB, 2 things:
The following errors occurred with your submission

Clear your inbox, im was trying to send you a PM
2ns thing. By taking out your old hard drive and using a new one, you do not loose anything at all. You can gain access to all your 'life' on your old HDD. But I would use a new HDD to install a fresh install and then once everythinf is working well, transfer your 'life from your old HDD to the new one. Then you can format the old disk and use it as a backup drive.
I hope I sound clear in the above

Repair reinstall usually fixes XP issues, as long as the Hard Drive is ok.
but yes I recommend backing it all up onto another computer first.
