RD28 gearbox sound diagnostic
I hope this helps anyone with a rattle/groan coming from their gearbox behind a 2.8 or 3.0 petrol.
If you're noticing a rattle at idle that sounds like its coming from the bellhousing, its most likely not the clutch. If you play around and you find the noise is only with the clutch engaged, it is a gearbox bearing. Also if you notice the noise goes away on 4th gear, it is a countershaft bearing. I had this bearing fail in my gearbox, and after pricing up various rebuilds, I just swapped it with a low K second handie. The metal in the gearbox oil is a dead giveaway.

In my patrol I have alot of rattle sound! Sounds very bad in 3th and 5th gear. No sound in 4th gear. Does this mean it's a countershaftbearing that is broken? Is there a countershaft for 1st and 2nd gear, and one for 3th and 5th?

Jakob
