Check for the maitainance history ask the owner about previuos trips try avoid high beach work cars look for rust stone damage oil leaks the usual ask your mechanic to check it over if not great on the tools yourself and test drive for more than 5 mins to hear noises play in suspention etc drive at all speeds smooth and rough roads engage 4wd etc

Hi superroo
Mate i have a 2003 GU111 3.0L Auto
Thought i did enough resurch in relation the patrols 4wd abilaty and just asumed they were a tough as nails engine.
Its well noted on this site that the early ZD30 engines had some major problems.
From what i can work the GU111 and on were less likely to have engine failure if you have it serviced every 5,000km. That's oil , oil filter, fuel filter & air filter. Do these my self to keep the cost down.
What i can tell you is bougth mine second hand with 127,000km on the clock of a dealer as a one owner and serviced every 5,000km as per the service history in the log book.
I cant help but think that the previous owner was aware of the ZD30 engine failures.
That being said i and happy with my choice and the way the patrol performs (chip & exhaust up grade) I plan on doing the NADS (you can also surch this) not sure if it is required for the later models.
Good luck with the resurch

Most of the zd issues were solved post 03 i believe however there are failsafes you can put it (NADS) which can help you prevent damage happening. Bad fuel seems to be the biggest killer of the 3L diesels with there high tolerance pumps etc. Nothing a well setup fuel filtration system cant sort out though
