I was trying to change for 4H to 4L and didn't put car in neutral however I was stopped, made a grinding noise real bad. I did this the first few times, had it look at and all was fine.
A woodland in full color is awesome as a forest fire, in magnitude at least, but a single tree is like a dancing tongue of flame to warm the heart.

As soon as you put transfer in neutral, the gearbox can spin as if in gear but with no load on driveline it can free spin. Ie. The gears are turning. Your trying to crash moving gears into stationary gears to join transmission to driveline. One is spinning, the other is not.

Just put transmission into neutral and stop vehicle when you change from high to low or low to high.

see above. 1peter wrote that he was stationary, yet still got the 'can't find 'em, grind 'em!' sound effect.

The car is an auto, the gearbox was in neutral and was stationary with the engine running. As i originaly posted the problem was that i hesitated in neutral (between low 4x and high 4x) with the transfer case.

Sorry I thought you meant you were in drive in transmission.
You shouldn't really have a problem putting it in neutral in transfer then into low or high.

I can put into neutral and then into low or high without any crunching of gears. Mine is a Manual Transmission
The only thing that I can think of is that your are revving your Motor too high and the Auto Transmission is driving the Transfer Case
