I would say with the auto as your still getting some sort of frictional drive through it when in neutral this is why it says not to hesitate where as with the manual nothing is driving the output until you select a gear and plus when you have the clutch in no drive is going through the box. I would be inclined to say it will shift easier between the 2 if it were in park with handbrake off.

    Hi 1peter,

some fu22 on the magnetic drain plug is not unusual.

I could have expressed my post better - the main point is that whatever presumably minimal damage has been done won't be made worse by any filings released as a result, as the magnetic plug will trap them, rather than, for example, let them be trapped in the moving part of a bearing.

I rang an auto specialist shop this morning and the guy said, don't worry, and that i would have to continue crunching it for a couple of months before i would do any damage. He also said, don't worry about changing the oil again (i did it 4 months ago) because they are like truck boxes and in all the time he has been working on gearboxes he has never had to repair a Nissan transfer case. Go the Nissan.

They seem to prefer N to change between 4h and 4 low. I think it has to do with the ATP(the thing that stops it rolling when in park)

With the New car Im always so worried about F@#$king something up changing into 4 wheel drive was one of them. In the old MK I used to change from 4H to 4L whilst driving (mainly on the beach) Only crunched the first time, never found excess ground metal when changing fluids in trany or transfer case. Dam I miss that car R.I.P

Shouldn't be too much drama with damage. Sounds like you know the correct procedure now. As previously mentioned it would be worth draining and replacing the oil in transfer. Cheap insurance.
