Dropped the winch out for a clean & re-grease.
Soaked the gears etc in petrol for the day.

No wonder it didn't want to free spool...
How they jammed 6 litres of thick black grease in a 4 litre winch gearbox is beyond me.

Just finished final cleanup of winch guts.
Looked like kilos and kilos and baby poo shoved inside and sealed ! Come out nice and clean after a bath in a blend of diesel and petrol.
Seals at motor end done a good job at keeping water out, mostly.
Inside of drum a bit rusty otherwise all good. Rotor in good nick.
Everything covered with Inox mx3 , and then all the cogs , regreased and ready to re-assemble.
Will bench test tomorrow, then good for another year.

Can you come over to my place and do mine? I'll make you a sandwich for lunch.

As long as you're the one cleaning the old grease off and me doing the rest...

Honestly, if you want a hand mate, or anybody else for that matter doing this, I'm more than happy to do it.
I've now done this with several winches.
They're all more or less the same concept.

Motor sealed and back together. Time for a test.

    Thanks heaps again @Cremulator mate!
Fitted our new ebay one just now after 18 years service on the oldy. Was becoming brittle too so really appreciate the heads up on your findings kindly shared mate!

These ones are a different profile to the OEM folks so do take note of the little instructions paper shipped within.
