Anyone know of any successful 3 litre to 4.2 litre conversions? Got a mate who's interested

It's been done many times. Assuming manual transmission you just need a different bell housing to mate the TD42 to the original gearbox. If it's an auto (and he wants to keep it as an auto) it will be a bit more difficult as TD42 flex plates, torque converters and bell housings are rare.

i am interested in this as my turbo blew up and been quoted 2500 to 3000 to replace it. What kind of cost is the conversion and does anyone offer a drive in drive out package? Also do you really think it would be worth the money?

If you can do the work yourself then in my opinion it is definately worthwhile. You can pick up a naturally aspirated TD42 for around $3500 and I would expect a TD42 turbo to be around $5000. Add say $2500 for conversion parts, clutch, bellhousing, belts, hoses, water pump, radiator etc and you're looking at between $5500 and $7500 for a bullet proof engine and a conversion that will actually increase the cars value.
It's a slightly different story if you have to pay someone to do the work as that could add an extra $2-3000 to the price. I'm sure most 4WD workshops would be happy to take on the job as a drive in/drive out job because the TD42 was a factory option for that model, the job can be done using factory Nissan parts that can be found easily.

i got a quote from patrol a part in lillydale they said to do the convertion drive in drive out was about 15,500k and thats not with a reco engine its just what they can get at the time, so the engine you get may have done 47k on the clock or you might one thats done 447k its just the luck of the draw

And if he's not sure about the 6.5 conversion he can put one in my GU as a trial. LOL
