    mq or gq

    hi guys
im new to patrols in short im into swb's 4bis turbo diesel

i only dispose of 10k and im not to sure what to get
so far ive seen a fair few mq for btw 1500 and 3000 $$$$$$$
they most likly be needing rebuilds and rust repair
on the other hand there are no so many but few gq's for btw 7 and 9k
    mostly needing good panel work

my question is seen the small budget what should i be looking for? what are the pros and cons?

yes i also seen a mq that has had a full motor rebuild new turbo the body was sandblasted rust cut of and then repainted about a year ago its ownersaid he mite consider 10k

    thanks greg

Seriously mate, keep looking - I bought my GQ originally for $7.5K and it's a Ti (fairly stock, but mechanically good, dual fuel and straight as an arrow on both chassis and panels).

My brother got an even better one for $7k on the knocker ...

Keep hunting and good ones come up - you just need to have the coin ready and the time to go see it the minute they become available.

x 2 on the comment above. Have the money ready, have the saved searches on Ebay, Car Sales, Gum tree, Trading post and do those searches each and every day and jump on it as soon as you see it and be the first one there with an eagle eye over the car.

I got my TD42 GQ with 215km's in mint condition for 10k mate but took me a good 8 months to find it.

Their out there but like Bigrig said, have the money ready and go for it.

Get a GQ with limited to no off road work.
In 99% of cases the more aftermarket mods it comes with the more it has been hammerd as well, motor gearbox, ect...
get something stock or close with lowich kms(200k) then do what you want to it.

I've owned both a GQ and MK in SWB and my choice is the GQ.
Red Patrol has the right ideas about buying a GQ above.
With the coils all round better ride, 4w disc brakes.
Parts at the wreckers for the GQ, but MQ & MK they don't want to know you.

Got my 91 TB42 auto Ti wagon for $5000. Had 2inch lift, bullbar, Cd player, neat as inside but with high k's........ By the time i spent money on Rego and transfer, Tyres, rims, UHF, Torque converter, TPS, a lot of labour chasing an auto box fault, An Extreme aftermarket valve body, temp sender and a few other bits, Im still under $10k and i know that everything ive done is going to last me a long time
Keep looking and have the money ready and the right questions ready to ask the seller.
    Goodluck

There as different as chalk and cheese !!!
Sure you mite get the ducks guts in an MQ/MK for the same money as a ruff as guts GQ
But you wont find a cheap pristine example, thats not high Ks, ruff, been off road unless you wanna pay
Tho they are out there, but the high demand base and all the people on the hunt for that elusive bargain GQ are really high
Turbo diesel GQ , your up there in the high demand ,high $$$ stakes straight up
IF your gunna flog the rings outta it, with no concern of a return on your money (as in youll kill it) MQ/MK can be had for cheapish
But like anything with age nowadays most are worth more in bits, considering a good running MQ/MK SD33T engine are in high demand theres alot of engineless MQ/MKs around
Id look into what exactly your planning to do and what costs your willing to pay for mods
MQ/MK gear is heaps cheaper than GQ gear

if your after a SWB with factory turbo diesel then you only have one choice ... the 3.3TD MK buts its leaf sprung.

better of going for a GQ diesel ...[ by the way, the TD42 motor in the GQ is not a turbo diesel ... the later GU came out with a TD42T and that one is turbo diesel but not available in SWB]

the GQ diesel is coil sprung and much easier to modify as there are heaps of accessories around, you can then get it turbo'd if you like or you may find one that already has an aftermarket turbo fitted
You can follow me but its gunna hurt !
