fuel consumption
Hi guys
I have a GU 4.2td that we use for pulling a Caravan which is 2 ton plus, the best i can get from the fuel consumption at the moment is 17.5 ltrs to 100kms, i need to improve this as we intend to travel round Oz next year i intend to fit a 3inch exhaust and turbo booster but will this help the fuel consuption the engine is in good condition burns no oil between services and does not blow out any smoke, i have looked into gas injecttion but was told it would not nececcarily improve fuel consumption would appreciate any help
Neil

A reputable diesel turning mob who know there stuff is a great place to start.... Do your exhaust & other mods first, then get it tuned properly by a pro.

LPG is a good option for more pulling power and a cleaner burn in the pistons , 60 cents a litre and turn it on when you need it cheers Alex

So your dragging a van that probably has a higher roof line that the patrol, causing excess wind resistance, then pulling the 2 tonne, usually up and down hills, inclines and your complaining about 17L/100Ks
Yes its a diesel and yes they are known for the economy, but you are towing a van non the less
My petrol GQ gets worse economy empty , no trailer and rolling down hills
Bigger exhaust and more boost should help , but i wouldnt expect a massive improvement

Hi Neil
I have 06 ute with canopy which is a bit higher than the cab (200mm) and have 3" exhaust with 15psi boost and dyno tuned. Power increased considerably and a lot better to drive usually in 1 gear higher than before tune up but no noticeable improvement in fuel economy. Presently 13.2 to 13.7 lt per 100klm with load on highway so I would guess 17.5 lt per 100klm is the best you will get with 2 tons behind you. I was getting high 11's to 12's before canopy and tune up but with the extra power available, you tend to use it.
cheers
At the end of the day, all you have is yourself and all you need is your friends (and in our case our Patrol)

i have looked into LPG and once spoke to a guy who fitted expensive conversions he told me improved fuel consumption would be negligible

Sounds like pretty reasonable fuel consumption to me.
If you spend a lot in mods to get slight gains in economy, you'll have to drive round Australia more than once to recoop your costs.
Hope you have a great trip.
