Battery installed by Idiot, ME.

Hi guy's, I had a brain fade the other day, was installing new battery,(Old one keep going flat) but it was raining and i just threw the new one in, didint take any notice and ...well the rest is obvious, a small spark when i attached the earth terminal to the positive , i thought yes you bugger there must be a small short, look into u later. went to start no power, angain obviously..........
gave myself a rather long talkin too, and started to chase fuses,
Main ignition 65 amp blown next to battery,and 15 amp fuse inside at kickboard ECU engine control unit 15 amp,
Have breached the main fuse with ......., so now have ignition and dash lights to all but Glow light, and battery in engine will wind over and over but willnot start.
I am thinking solinoid or another fuse ?
Also the ECU fuse blows again.
I have Gregorys manual for the car , but not much elec knowledge, but hey i'm here to learn and help if poss, will be grateful to any tips in sortin this out.

im a sparkie and reverse polarity is not a good thing, i think the ecu may be fired as it keeps blowing your fuse. i hate to be the bearer of bad news but i think the repair bill is going to be hefty. i know for a fact but stereos dont work after conecting them backwards, dont ask me how i know but as you turned the key with the battery backwards everything in your car has seen reverse voltage, so anything with electronic in them are probably buggered, hopefully you did not have a cb or anything too.

i would first pull a spark plug lead and see if you still got spark. then see if your fuel pump still operates.

hopefully someone else chimes in and its an easy fix but i think at a bare minimun your up for a new ecu.

i figured about the same, will remove it and get it checked, there should be some arround the wreckers i'm hopping.
but any other people who have an idea would be happy to hear.
P.S. it is a diesil non turbo

sorry thought it was a petrol, hopefully the glow plugs and stuff all come out of the one box, but i have no further if any knolledge on diesels, good luck.

I guess the good news is that It's a diesel in that situation.

Hows the glow plug fuse link going next to the 65amp one you blew?

Is that soft and not burnt?

If It's hard as a rock and looks burnt then could be an issue?

Hi there AB, thanks for havin alook at my issue, the Glow plug fuse link is still good,
But i think i may have had a little moment to think harder and ....
When i went to the fuel section (because i can crank it over, so fuel had to be the issue),
it showes me a apth to follow, starting at the ..oh well it starts on page 81 item 8,
Preheat system.
will keep all updated as i progress or stall, lol.

What model Patrol are we talking about? is it a GQ 4.2 diesel?

If so, the 15 amp fuse I think you are referring to, also supplies power to the injector pump, this would explain why the vehicle is not starting.

I would start by disconnecting the glow plug timer control unit (under fuse box inside vehicle) and see if the 15 amp fuse blows again.

If it doesn't blow, I would retry starting it, at the moment it should start without glow plugs but to be on the safe side you could supply direct power to the glow plug rail (busbar) for about 15 seconds and then try cranking it.

There is also a small possibility that you have damaged your alternator

Hi Yender, 1st up yes it is 89 42 diesel.
Me not being very electricly minded , have viewed the wiring diagram and see what you are sugguesting,
i will try this 1st , was then going to just try and supply the injector direct from battery and see if she would kick over.
weather is right to try and start without glow if in middle of day and have a good new 760cca battery to use also

Well Guys, a little update,
really only slow because, like all life makes us busy.Anyway.................yada.....

The Beauty's up and going again, thanks to following, Yendor The Greats tips
Disconected the Glow plug timer unit, bridged the 65 amp fuse with ...,wire...
replaced the 15 amp fuse
and with good conditions and good Batt, She drew a breath and a yehah went up from the hugs and kisses,
who was watching from the pool, ....yadah.yadah.......
Thank's guys the news is good, now need to follow up on why the old batt decided to die,
might be one of those earth issues i've read.
the old girl ain't rego'ed anymore , needed a small box for the 2 and fro work thing.
But now with the tips arround here and i think i'm winning with the jobs to do, no must do, so a restoration could be on the cards.
got to figure out how to upload some pics and show her to you all.
And the new fuse15 amp

Isn't the idea of a fuse that it blows first, before ecu's and other sensitive equipment blows up.
