Definitely a local thing, as I have never seen any old timer movies showing kids doing this elsewhere, but a pack of kids would run around the neighborhood collecting any piece of wood board we could find, asking any mechanic shop for old ball bearings and making ourselves some "downhill go karts" for a GP later on the same day.
As precisely described by MB, looking for ways to properly injure ourselves, LOL.
