Can't restore because its found local disk errors and wants to check errors but you can only schedule error checking on next start up which will fail... Lol
All I can recommend is using another computer to do a backup then running a full checkdisk and this should tell you if the drive is repairable or not.

Cheers mudski. I have the Windows 7 install disk on its way.
Rusty_nail has been helping me so far and it sounds like he's taking me down the same path you have mentioned apart from downloading the drivers. Grab a USB and get the drivers tomorrow. How big are they? Should they all fit onto a 2gb stick?

I can't check disk in either option as it fails on boot to check and in cmd it says the volume is in use.

No only vista lappy. I do have an old clunker xp clevo laptop from the 90's somewhere here but I would be amazed if that dinosaur fired up...lol
