Thank you gents, I feel somewhat slightly better...lol
I am a software bloke not hardware so I struggle with this.
Ill take it to my friend tomorrow and spend tonight in the fetal position praying the information is still there.
Ill turn it off now as I have been known to try and DIY fix ups and make things worse...lol

I'm no computer guru but try booting to command prompt only, majority of the time its the F8 key to give you booting options then run Chkdsk
or boot up in safe mode and run Chkdsk
I have had it happen before and I have always recovered from it.
The other thing to try if you have a spare computer 2 use is run your HDD as a slave 9 times out of 10 it will recognize its got an error and run the Chkdsk anyway
Time is never wasted when your wasted all the time

Advanced
Just to clarify a repair reinstall of windows xp will leave all user files and programs as is but will reset windows.
I use to do it all the time easy as fix.
Quick google have a read of this https://forums.malwarebytes.org/inde...howtopic=61918

Ok so I'm assuming its not a good idea to leave computers on all the time in case or black outs or surges or solar flares which are apparently due soon and will bring us back to the Stone Age shortly????

id guess it would give it a chance to do auto updates occasionally and also let it have a little rest

You should run your computers thru a surge protector / battery backup and should have decent cooling if leaving them on 24/7
