As for installing them, they all won't fit in my compact PC and it also negates their option of quick & easy portability.
Hey if it meets your needs then have at it. I just find usb hdds can be a bit slow with mass data storage at times.

Go to "Personalisation" settings and "start" click on "choose which folders appear on start" make sure "file explorer is in the off position"

It's something like that. I'm not at my computer to check it for you(because I'm in Bali ) but it's in there somewhere.

If find this a safe guard & portable option for saving everything should the PC or internal drive crash. Recently the PC, when started, instead of going to the desktop, now opens the menu on all the "plugged in" hard drives. This is happening 9 out of 10 times.

Any ideas why, and how to stop this happening? I think it may have started after the most recent auto OS upgrade.
Sounds like a feature re-introduced in W10 (PCs used to do this ages ago).

I remembers what yo had open at shut down and automatically launches those programs for you at startup.

Try closing all open windows / programs / apps before you shut down.

Shut down and startup again and see if the windows re-open upon startup. I strongly suspect it's this.

What if I gave up my monthly automatic microsoft subscription and just bought a microsoft cd from officeworks, would that shield me from the continuous online updates and surveillance?

Yes I know that might cost a bomb up front compared to my $18/month or thereabouts, but might that stop me getting heavily bombarded with updates and intruisive programs I don't know how to handle?

All I want is a simple operating system that doesn't track or shadow me or change things or try to sign me up to systems I don't want.

    Is that possibls these days?
You may be interested in Chromebooks? They need to have Internet access as they rely on being online. I don't have any 1st hand experience with them, but you may find them useful.

Unfortunately we live in a Windows world.

Only way is to stick with an older version of Office matey, office 2013 being the last one that didn't need subscription I believe. You don't really miss out on much, most of the update features aren't shit you would likely use anyway?

Used to work in a school, seen a few kids with the Chromebooks. My biggest issue with them is they are usually quite low spec'd and therefore would only expect to get max 2-3 years put of them if you want to stay current with programs etc. They are still an option but I don't really believe Google's os offering is comparable to windows or Mac OS's
