3lt petrol (RB30) and 2.8lt diesel (RD28) were manual only, no auto option.
I don't know the answer to the original question.

AT a quick look on the internet it would seem Ben was on the right track. RE4R01A was fitted to RB series engines among others, but I don't think it was ever fitted to any Patrols.

The RE4R01A was Nissans standard 4 speed auto from the late 80’s and used in virtually all models that had an auto trans option. The RE4R03A is simply a heavy duty version of the R01A. To my knowledge it was only used in the Patrol, the V8 Infinity and 300ZX Turbo by Nissan, but was also used in some Isuzu and Mazda light trucks. There are also front wheel drive versions eg, the RE4F01A.
The physical difference is mostly with the valving/programming and number of clutches per pack. It would be similar to the difference between the GM Trimatic TH180 4, 6 and 8 cylinder versions.
