Gq tb-42 wagon auto to manual conversion, advice needed.
Hi All,
My auto in my 90 GQ, TB-42 wagon has sh*t itself, I am going to do a 5 speed manual conversion on the old girl. Have found complete 5 speed conversion, what I need to know is if the auto tailshafts are the same as the 5 speed shafts, so weather I will need to change the shafts or I can use my auto shafts. Also if there is any other problems I may encounter doing this conversion.
WithThanks Jeff.

As far as I know the transfer case is in the same position so the tailshafts should fit OK.
Changing to a 3 pedal pedal box will probably require removing the dash, not a 5 minute job.
You will need to modify the auto inhibitor switch wiring so the car thinks it's in neutral all the time so you can start it.

Hi Tony,
Thanks for that, I am planning on removing the complete auto wiring and computer, hopefully that will take care of the wiring. I hope that I dont have to remove the whole dash just to fit clutch pedal.
With thanks Jeff.

Hi Jeff,
I think you still have to remove the dash if you want to remove the whole wiring loom. You might even need to replace the meter console. I'd tried to swap mines (auto) once before but mission have to be aborted..cant really remember why though.

you do have to take the whole dash out to do the wiring loom (doing my second one at the moment) and the drive shafts are exactly the same. the dash cluster is fine, the o/d and Tranny temp lights dont light up with a manual loom

Hi Todd,
I have 2 trans computers sitting here, 1 is a spare and the other is still in GQ, I have no idea how much they are worth, make me an offer, if you want 1 or both. I havnt started doing conversion yet, might be another couple of weeks yet till I get time, not looking forward to doing conversion, but looking forward to seeing the difference in power and if fuel economy changes with running the 5 speed.
Jeff.
