    Which Gearbox

    Hi all, I知 Mr Smoof.

I知 about to buy a 2005 Nissan patrol but not sure if automatic transmission is better for off road / camping or should I look for manual instead?

I知 new to off roading and want to have bit of fun with the Mrs

    Cheers

Welcome to the forum. I really like manuals for driving anytime, but I would have to agree autos are slightly better offroad in certain circumstances.

Make a pro and con list for each type before buying.

Autos can generate a bit more torque and be more precise when in rocky terrain. They also make it easier to climb big dunes as they can change down gears quickly.

Manuals are tougher and cheaper to run.

    I love my 4spd auto.

It's definitely heaps more friendly after a tune, holding 3rd when I plant my foot instead of dropping to 2nd and bouncing all over the place.

Sometimes you gotta give it a bit to get going in off-road situations then it's too much, but riding the brake at the same time can kinda mitigate that.

I'm not fussed between manual and auto, I will live with whatever the car has got.

@AB Can you help this poor soul move their apostrophe? It's important.
