    TD rev range opinions.

I asked this on a FB page and the primitive cesspool hanging out there, quickly turned the discussion into a abortion and admin threw the axe at it. Here's hoping I have lighter experience here lol.
We own a (wife's daily) 2006 wagon. We've had it just under a year after moving down to Melbourne from QLD.
It went to a mechanic last week for a good look over and service as were doing a trip shortly.
I mentioned that to me the car feels underpowered before handing keys to him. He said hell look into it.
Car checked out fine except for a ceized lock hub which I didnt know about. And he (the machanic) said the car has plenty of go power wise. I was kinda surprised at this was hoping otherwise. So he suggested lets go for a drive which we did within a few hundred meteres he said he found the issue. THE DRIVER. APparently I dont rev it out far enough on each gear. rev it out to 2000-ish or just under or over before shift. TO me that seems legit for a no frills truck motor. He disagreed and suggested this motor lives in the 2000s and 3000s rev range unless taking off.
Now i come from a previous ownership of a 4.8 so Im no stranger to tickling the red bits (taco that is). But it just does not feel right with this dinosaur diesel in terms of sending the needle up too high.

Diesel drivers , please comfort me. lol

I presume you’re referring to the TD42T when you say dinosaur? I’m like you, I like to change up at 2000 because the thing can still pull at 1500 in the next gear up. But you wont be fast. The motor does love the 2-3000rpm range but for general accelleration from a standing start I don’t see the point in giving it a boogie. Leave that for when you need it offroad IMO.

What is the charge? Eating a meal? A succulent Chinese meal??

You don't say anything about the state of tune.
If it's still at factory settings it will be very lazy.
I usually change up at around 2k or so when driving normally.

TD's produce most of there power in the lower end of the rev range. I would say between 2-3k. Anything higher than that and you can feel the power drop off even though revs are climbing. I'm sure you can tune it to still maintain power at higher rpm but personally the thing that I love about diesels is feeling that low end torque.

    dinosaur

Will depend on your tyre size, diff ratio, state of tune etc. Most of the torques are made "just off" idle.... before 1500n iirc. No idea on the horsepony curve, but yeah.... they're tractors.
3k rpm seems excessive for normal driving.
Fit an EGT, that will show you exactly how happy your engine is at what revs/scenario.

Anywhere between 2300 and 3000 for my old TD. It will still produce power right up to 4000rpm aswell. But this is how mine has been built and tuned. Anything under 2000rpm and it hates it and refuses to perform.
In stock form I don't know, but if they've had a tickle, the answer to your question will be different every time.

2006 TD42i - Stock except for 3" exhaust & dyno'd for towing , with a modest increase to max boost (from stock 7psi to 13.2psi). After several years of running it like this I still think that the exhaust & dyno made it into the car it should have been off the showroom floor. None of the oft reported overheating issues & the motor has been ultra reliable, so much so it's fair to say that of all the vehicles I've owned this is the one I trust the most. Perfect for the use for which it was purchased.Long term remote touring. No dragster, but lots of torque, & turbo cuts in at around 1800rpm. In normal everyday use I change up at around 2000rpm to 2200rpm, but if extra speed is needed that can go up to 3000rpm. I rarely take it over 3000rpm. In travel mode we generally have an all up weight (car & camper) of around 5 Tonnes.

2006 4.2TDi ex-Telstra Remote area Camper. 425w roof mounted solar, 360Ah Aux batts, BCDC1240, Onboard hot & cold pressurised & filtered water, (25 litre hot water calorifier), ARB fridge, ARB freezer, Built in kitchen, heaps of easy access storage, 240v, 3” Genie exhaust + dynotune, 2” lift, 3900kg GVM upgrade, second glovebox, ROH Blaktrak steel wheels, Bridgestone D697's (now Toyo RT's), Redarc gauges/pillarpod, Hema HX-1, Icom 450 CB, dual rear view cameras, Onboard 30amp Victron mains charger, second glovebox, dual seat conversion, TPMS, Boss PX7 onboard air with 9 litre tank, 350w inverter, Steel bullbar, Harrop Eaton diff lock (front), Warn winch, Snorkel, Dual spares , 160 litre water tank, 180 litre fuel in two tanks (approx 1200km range) 2010 Tvan Tanami. I occasionally push mine over 3000 rpm but only to remind myself why there's not much point in doing it.. Mine's auto so it changes up before 2000 anyway on light throttle.

Yes it is a turbo intercooled. THanks all for the replies. My last reply didnt go through for some reason.
I'll run with my instincts and your replies drive it like a mack truck. As i said i just dont feel this thing liking being revved high im rather surprised the way the mechanic drove it is the way he thinks is the way to get up and go out of it. Patrol needs a few small things done like and ill think of taking it elsewhere.
