An all terrain pattern will last longer than a mud pattern,
I've had great mileage from Cooper ATR's, Great on the HWY
minimum noise and better fuel figures than fitting Muds,
Downside is lousey traction on any muddy roads

Bridgestone 697 AT's. Around $300 per tyre.
They are cost effective as they are a high quality tyre but not as expensive as some of the US brands.

Original Bridgestones lasted 125000k for 5 tyres rotated every 10000k so replaced with 694's and still very impressed with wear and low noise.
Unless the US tyres come down in price considerably or something drastic happens, I'll definitely go 697's next year for planned trip to Kimberleys and back to the Cape for the meet up in September.
By coincidence the first set of tyres I put on any car was Bridgestone copy of original Pirelli radial back in 1968 on my EH wagon. After the cross plies,it was unbelievable difference.

I like Hankook for my 18inch low profile rims, but otherwise I can't fault Bridgestone for my smaller car.
Tires are the only thing between you and the road, so it's never a good idea to skimp out.
