Alternative to " start you bastard'
hI, That stuff is very good on petrol motors, diesels have twice the compression. The stuff explodes when the piston is only half way up,,, not good,,, way too early,,, knock the shit out of your engine.
Im no expert but I use a can of butane for gas cookers,, put a plastic head on it from an insecticide can, works for me , and only $1 instead of $14

Per the MSDS for "start ya bastard" :
"3. COMPOSITION INFORMATION CHEMICAL ENTITY CAS NO PROPORTION
Solvent naphtha, petroleum, light aliphatic 64742-89-8 30-40 %
Diethyl ether 60-29-7 10-20 %
Hydrocarbon propellant, as 50-60 %
Alkanes, C3-4 "
So... mostly just napthalene/petrol.
Does it detonate before TDC? I don't know, I'd need to see some kind of science to believe it.
Being said, if you can't start a diesel engine with pre-heat/glow then you probably have an issue to sort out...
Butane is just a lighter fraction of petrol distillate...if anything i would think -more- prone to detonate.

Just gave it a google and butane has an octane rating of 92... so depending where in the world you find yourself, that's approx equivalent to pump petrol. (generall 89-98 octane)
