    OCAM Extendable Towing Mirrors For GU Patrol DX Ute

    Morning all,

    Well over the past week I've been searching around the forums for information on the fitting of Power Towing Mirrors to GU Patrol . . . particularly the DX model range.

    Unlike other manufactures, Nissian seems to not have a common wiring harness between the DX & LT Range of Patrol's, the DX range having a totally different Wiring Loom that has deleted the Power Window Wiring portion out of the Wiring Loom.

    There is one youtube video by one owner who has gone as far as buying the Wiring Loom from the wreckers and using it to add Climate Control and Power Windows to his GU Patrol DX Ute . . . I'm not that ambitious, but I do dislike the few time each month I need to get out of My Patrol and walk around to the passenger door 4 or 5 times to adjust the mirror bumped while out 4WDing or in car parks or at home.

    So here's what I hope my solution will be . . . a OCAM Universal Power Mirror Switch.

    I shall be interested to see how this turns out.
    Not that I want to change what I have on my DX ute. Although the 'readjusting walk' can be a tad tedious, particularly as it generally needs several walks around to the passenger side, I remain a fan of the KISS principal. When I'm pushing through tight bush & the mirrors are taking a beating I like that I don't have the added concern of electrics.

    Having a wife in the passenger seat to do the adjusting helps ...... even with the oft repeated question about which way 'tip it forwards' means!

    Well success.

    OK, so for the past week I have been looking through the Patrol Forums as I said above, trying to find any success stories of members fitting some kind of universal power mirror switch to work with larger Power Towing Mirrors on the DX Range and I found bugger all.

    I notice in an google image search, that Clearview had a Power Mirror Switch & Wire Loom Kit, along with OCAM . . . both listed for the Toyota 79 Series Landcruiser Mirrors. So looking through the ARB GU Patrol Parts list, and I quote {Fitting electric mirror to factory non electric mirrored vehicle requires (SP-EK) - https://www.clearviewaccessories.com.au/product/clearview-electric-kit/} the Clearview kit is listed fat $99.

    So looking at the OCAM Kit, it looked very similar or identical to the Clearview Power Control Switch Kit, but the OCAM Kit sold for $70 . . . so what the chances????

    So what the hell, off to OCAM at Moorebank near Liverpool yesterday afternoon to pickup a set of OCAM Black Electric Mirrors (SKU: TM2-Y61-BLK) and the "Switch & Harness for OCAM Towing Mirrors to suit Toyota Landcruiser 76 78 79 Series (SKU: TM2-70-SWITCH).

    "Switch & Harness for OCAM Towing Mirrors to suit Toyota Landcruiser 76 78 79 Series (SKU: TM2-70-SWITCH) The Power Mirror Control Switch came without any instructions, but the wiring is basic, RED Power Wire, Black Earth Wire, then two wiring looms for Left & Right, both about 1m long each. As the Left Loom only gets you to the 'B' Pillar, there is an extra 1m loom provided for the Left side to get you into the Door Cavity.

    The Wiring Loom is wrapped in Cloth Tape, and the wire looms have plug pins already attached, the installer just needs to push the pins into the provided plugs once the Looms have been run into place.

    I started the Wiring Insulation by first mounting the Control Switch . . . where I use to have Driving Lights Toggle switch. This location, I've seen Photos showing the Mirror Control Switch located in this position for Series 1 to 3 Patrols. The OCAM Control Switch fits almost nice and snuggly here. I had trimmed some of the plastic away in the past, to accommodate the Driving Lights Toggle Switch, which leaves a gap at the bottom and top of the OCAM Control Switch . . . in time I'll see what I can do to fill in these gaps.

    Right Once the Control Switch was in place, it was time to work out which Wire Loom was for which side. I achieved this by using a Voltage Circuit Tester and testing the Red/Green/Yellow Wire Loom, and seeing which side - Left or Right switched indicated voltage . . . . identifying the R/G/Y Loom was the Left Mirror Wire Loom and
    the White/Purple/Brown Wiring Loom was the Right Mirror Side.

    After identifying which Wiring Loom was for which side, it was time to run the Loom into the door cavities. To do this, I pulled the Rubber Grommet/Tube from the B Pillar and Door, and with the use of a coat hanger and electrical tape pulled the Wiring Loom through the Grommet Tube into the door cavity and up to the Mirror Plugs.

    I ran the Red/Green/Yellow Wire Loom from the Control Switch, up over the steering Colum and with the aid of the coat hanger pulled the Red/Green/Yellow Wire Loom through above the Audio Unit to the Left Hand 'B' Pillar. At the 'B' Pillar, I attached the 1m Red/Green/Yellow Wire Loom and pulled the shorter Loom through doors Rubber Grommet/Tube into the door cavity and connected the Loom to the Left Mirror.

    Power hook-up, I used a Double Low-Profile MINI Blade Fuse Socket Wire Tap from Jaycar, I trimmed back the Positive Hook-up Cable on the switch side of the Glass Fuse, and joined the positive cable to the Blade Fuse Socket Wire Tap, using a 7.5amp Mini Fuse.

    The Earth Cable I earthed to a earth point on the 'B' Pillar behind the footwell kickboard.
