    Roof gutter rust help

GQ long well base station wagon style

So I have the dreaded rusted gutters. Design flaw in the GQ, the panels there are bent and pressed so at some points there is a sandwich of three overlapping plates and the seam rusts from the inside out.

    anyway

ive cut out the rust. yes it was 100 times worse inside than out. Yes it may eventually come back in the future further down the gutter, but this will give us a few more years. Will weld new sections in. This is a new project for us, never done welding and patching, but hey I will just give it a crack and see how it goes. Worst comes to worse I get a real fabricator in to fix my stuff ups.

see photos. Yes the previous owner had simply bogged a few holes without doing anything more

The issue is rust prevention on the inside.

    questions

    1
i will want to rust proof the inside of the patches . I will use gal primer spray on the inside of the patches before assembly. Weld area will however need more on the inside (the bald spray will burn away - and even weld through would need more treatment). Then I’m thinking of drilling through from the inside of the cab through the liner and inner sheet, then spray primer and then fish oil on the inside of the patches. The liner seems glued around the edge. Not really removable. Any tricks there? Just drill a hole then put a clip through the hole (I’ve got a box of assorted car trim clips)?

I’ve made the patches. I’m pretty please with the fit considering this is my first time ever. Just took my time and got a nice fit. I’ve hit a problem. how to make the gutter. I tried to bend the metal patch to make a new gutter, but it dint have the equipment to accurate tight bends like that. So I made a flat patch and then to weld a new gutter onto the patch. Buggered if I can do it though. The patch isn’t straight (I’ve made to flow similar to car original lines, which isn’t dead straight. Do I even need a new gutter? Is it just for roof racks?

    3
strength. The original sheet there is sometimes three sheets together. Would a single patch be OK. Would it matter if it isn’t? The gutter section is quite low and just above the bottom join. The three sheet section is above the gutter.

    thanks for any tips.

Hey mate, yep had the dreaded gutter rust on my GQ, decided to go a shell swap with a clean one, big job but she came up good. . . Only regret (probably few others lol) was not pulling the head lining out to treat inside properly. . Reckon this is the only way to get in there with ease to apply some sort of product and know you've got the best coverage possible. . However the applicators for treating inside of chassis inserted through little hole might be a good option in theory too but guess won't know till you try it. . Headlining is glued around windows and pillars so bit of a gamble if it can be resurrected once unstuck, not sure on price and availability but would imagine new one should be available. .

As for gutters have seen people remove them on ute's and look pretty good so could do the same I'm sure with wagon but yep would loose ability to fit rack. . If you could source a wreck cutting bits of gutter out to patch in would work you world think. . Anyways good luck sure she'll come up great

    G’day @MartyS Mate!
Could be worthwhile creating a ‘Wanted’ to good home type thread certainly on here and elsewhere too seeking the rear GQ gutters you require.
There is a lot of GQ twin cab custom ute chops happening out there these days and they generally throw the wagon backs away or scrap metal them.
    Best of Luck Mate

I reckon we could trim out a chunk bigger than necessary and then he trims to suit. Packing would require a wooden box of some sort to preserve the shape based on my AustPost or TNT experiences.
