Appreciate the info guys, will see if i can find that YT vid, i does seem that if common sense are to prevail i should just stick a 50b in for peace of mind.

For those interested, the transfer boxes are completely compatible - confirmed with a specialist here in the UK.
Also for reference the 30a and 50b both share the same input shaft too.

For what it’s worth too DG370 Mate, I stopped into a Melbourne (Dobinsons Springs) outlet only last week or two to pickup and whilst waiting learnt a shipload off the young Bloke Legend on the counter. Him and his knowledgeable genuinely overachieving friends were very experienced in converting cheaper Aussie GQ (Y60) 2.8L trucks to extremely higher powered Ford Barra/Chev type motors IIRC?
Young Legend straight up said their weaker boxes cannot handle their Shenanigan’s and his Mrs had laid down the laws of no more!!

Cannot find the video again but seem to remember he mentioned exact engine power numbers versus the big box as his choice, worth trying to find that video I believe DG370 Mate

Hi Guys n gals. Been a while and I trust you’ve all kept well.
DieselPumpUK on YT is a compendium of information on the OM606 into various cars. He bought a GU to match to a big turbo OM606 because of the strength of its drivetrain & the results seem too good to be true. Fully mechanical MASSIVE fuel pump & custom intake manifold and pulls 6000rpm’s.

The boxes in the RD28 are also used in the Skyline and the other Nissan sportscar - 300Z - perhaps they are up to the HP and torque? I know its a huge difference in size to the TD42 box. The transfers are the same, just the housings change - I have the same transfer in my V8 from the RD28 upgrade.

There are upgrades available from places like 360 Gearboxes & Diffs PTY LTD in Bayswater Victoria. I had a chat with them about it a few years ago. They listed a quite a few things they do to keep the boxes together under high loads. It comes with a fairly high bill too. Personally, I found that the bearings in the gear cluster tend to wear out when towing, I tend to nurse the unit.
My advice is: not to follow my advice.
