Starting / running problems .. which scan tool for 2000 Gu Y61 ZD3 DI Patrol
Hi all, I’ve had a quick look at existing posts and can’t find what I need to know (but I’m blonde)
I’m the go between for my housemate who is not computer savvy, so pls bear with me if I am not asking the right questions
Garry is looking to find out which scan tool, diagnostic reader or whatever you call them nowadays, to try and find out why he is having problems with starting his Patrol. He replaced the ignition relay (with a second hand one borrowed from a friend) and it did start, but then faltered. He is trying to find out which scan tool to buy.
Have been told OBDII by some people, but others say they are for 2007 upwards. ECUtalk has been mentioned.
The plug under the dash shows 16 pins, but it may possibly only use 14 of those. It’s a tapered plug that needs to be plugged in.
He is at a complete loss at this stage. Any help would be greatly appreciated. He doesn’t want to buy one of these things to find it doesn’t work, as they cannot be returned.
If anyone can think of why this is happening, their thoughts would also be welcome
Cheers and beers
Jenn

Missing in Action
Codes can be extracted & cleared manually. Hope this helps.
MANUAL EXTRACTION
1. Switch ignition ON.
2. Confirm the Check Engine Lamp illuminates.
1. (The system will be in Diagnostic Test Mode I.)
2. Bridge Diagnostic Connector terminals 1 and 8.
3. Confirm the Check Engine Lamp extinguishes.
4. Wait at least two seconds.
5. Disconnect the bridge between Diagnostic Connector terminals 1 and 8.
6. (The system will be in Diagnostic Test Mode II.)
7. Read Fault Codes as flashes of the Check Engine Lamp.
Read the codes by counting the number of flashes of the Check Engine warning lamp. The
code numbers are displayed as sets separated by a 2.1 second pause. Each set comprises
a series of 0.6 second flashes, a 0.9 second pause and a further series of 0.3 second
flashes. The first set represents the first 2 digits of the code and the second set
represents the last 2 digits.
Example 1 - Code 0102 (Air Flow sensor) would be shown as one 0.6 second flash, a 0.9
second pause and two 0.3 second flashes.
Example 2 - Code 1004 (Injection Pump fuel cut out system) would be shown as ten 0.6
second flashes, a 0.9 second pause and four 0.3 second flashes.
Note: To cease retrieving codes or to read codes again, turn the ignition off and wait at
least ten seconds before restarting the above procedure if necessary.

CLEARING FAULT CODES
1. After reading the fault codes as described, reconnect the wire bridging terminals 8 (IGN)
and 1 (CHK) while the ignition is still on.
2. Wait at least two seconds and then remove the wire bridging the terminals. Any stored
codes should now be erased.
Note: Fault codes are also erased if the battery is disconnected for more than 24 hours.
3.Road test the vehicle and check that there are no fault codes stored.

Hi Fruitloop
Any OBD2 scanner WILL NOT WORK! I have 2002 Gu3 zd3 and the socket looks like an obd one. Apparently some earlier ones were square. An OBD device fits mine but will not connect. Ever.
I have a bluetooth device called NISBIE plugged in here and bluetoothy connected to an android head unit. No IOS support here. It is glitchy, but it works. It does not cost much either. You download NDSI software to the android device, pair it with the Nisbie and it will tell you what errors are present. And let you clear them.
But.. your mate is struggling to start his car, is it throwing a Check Engine Light? If not, the diagnostic device will not help you.
Cheers!
Ps starts and falters? Fuel filter?

Faaaaaaaaarrr .. out. I read this out to him, and HE just told me the ‘check engine light’ comes on all the time (has been for years)
He said he has been turning the key on and off a couple of times and it goes away 🤷*♀️ I didn’t know any of this 🤦*♀️
He redid the head etc ? a month or so ago, and it was fine, then suddenly didn’t want to start, or if it did, wouldn’t drive for long before it decided to park up. He has changed the fuel filter, but made no difference.
I’m seriously think I’m gonna have no hair left by the end of this 😶
Cheers & Beers
