I am not going to sell it, when I realised how good it is, then and only then did I decide I wanted to fix the manifold gasket. Even though I broke the thermostat bolt it does not use any water and runs too cold for my liking. When I first got it a month ago today it took a lot of cranking to start and then the white/grey smoke would fill the yard so much I couldn't even think about driving it until it cleared. Now it takes about four seconds to fire and the white/ grey smoke lasts seconds. Again, I am new to diesels so I figured after searching that white/grey smoke is due to cold cylinders where the glow plugs are inefficient.

Definately don't remove the head to replace manifold studs, see if you can find a mobile thread repair specialist in your area.
At this stage I wouldn't be considering an engine rebuild if I was you, fix the manifold and replace the thermostat and see how it goes.
I also have a Terrano with a TD27T, it's a great little car but unfortunately I'll have to sell it soon, not enough child anchor points.
If I was keeping it I'd be wanting to swap in a QD32 with a turbo off a Navara ZD30 for a bit more grunt.

Ok, If I was you; I would repair manifold stud and do gasket, then get a set of injectors(preferably exchange overhauled set) and do the swap over of those, then get your deisel pump timing checked. I think you may be over fueling just a little. This becomes apparrent when going up hills, towing small loads, etc. But otherwise will only show on start up, at least that's what mine has taught me.

White/grey smoke is just unburnt diesel
If its only on start up , thats normal,IF it takes a while to start
Id go a set of glow plugs, peace of mind and they dont last forever
Black smoke is over fueling
Blue smoke is rings
Too much black smoke turn the fuel pump down
Too much blue smoke, then id be worried

How do I change the timing or do I have to take it somewhere? Where would you recommend near Mt Evelyn if I cannot do it? Also I am trying to get the heater working, just in case the weather turns cold again, but there is a screw holding on the heater panel on the left hand side behind a metal part. My workshop manual tells me to remove the inside of the glovebox. I found it a tedious task and when I completed it I still couldn't get to it with a screw driver. I have tried 90 degree screw drivers without success.

follow the manual to the letter and you will repair your heater.
You should take your diesel pump to a diesel repairer. Google "Diesel service" and pick location near you.
