weird noise
Hi guys, I have a weird noise coming from the front end. It sounsd like I might have done a bearing or something. The noise changes sound when I engage/disengage the aircon. I have looked under the bonnet and it sounds as if it is coming from the passengers side near the belts. The car still runs fine and if anything has lost a little power. Looking for idea's and whether this is going to be a big job.

2004 ZD30, I had to go looking to find that.
Check the drive belt tensioner pulley bearing and belt tensioner strut for wear, common problems on ZD30 engines.
Also use a mirror to check the bushes on each end of the tensioner ram for wear as shown in second photo.

Thanks Ynot, I have a spare one of these on my trashed 2004 model. I had just removed it for my brother so will switch it over and give it a whirl. I'll be back hopefully with good news.

Do you know the piece the top hole of the piston bolts to, is this part of the block or can it also be removed? It looks as if it is part of the block but I'm not sure.

It looks to be bolted on (in the first photo) so may be removable.

I changed over the drive belt tension pulley but the bloody noise is still there. It is still more prominant when the A/C is turned off and when I shut the truck down. I checked the bushes on the piston and they are both in good nick. It sounds like it is coming from the pulley below and slightly right of the piston. Any idea's??

I would check the alternator pulley, they run a clutch type set up and are prone to failing.
Also check the air conditioning compressor pulley bearing, with the belt off it should spin freely by hand.

Cheers Yendor, The air cond pulley spins freely however makes a gritty noise. Is this hard to replace or do I have to replace the whole thing?

The bearing is replaceable and apparently can be done without removing the compressor from the vehicle.
This saves having to re-gas the AC system.
Also if you are using a non genuine belt I would change this for a genuine belt.
