    front wheel bearing

97 GQ manual hubs front wheel bearing. I seem to have run out of thread on the front stub axel when adjusting the pre load on the wheel bearings. Has the fancy nut (special tool required) with one thrust washer between the nut and outer bearing. Ended up putting a second one in to get the screw to line up with the holes to lock the nut. I have the same problems on both sides. curious to see if its normal.

So you're saying with only one thrust washer per side the nut is bottoming out on the thread before the wheel bearings are preloaded?
Have you just replaced the wheel bearings?

had to add a thrust washer to allow me to allign the hole for the locking screws to get the desired pre-load. Bearings were not replaced. Under took this little job cause one side came loose so removed both to repack grease. replaced inner seal.

Tony, pulled it apart again and it looks like the inner bearing race has been running on the stub avle shoulder and worn a step into it thats about 1mm. thats the same on both sides.

I have heard of the stub axles wearing causing adjustment issues, ie, it doesn't matter how tight the wheel bearings are it still fells like the bearings are loose, sorry if that's what you were referring to all along.
Only fix for stub axle wear is new stub axles, don't bother with second hand parts, they're likely to be worn as well.

It appears i have a bit of play in the front offside wheelbearing, as i have never had locking hubs, is there a specific way to take up the slack?, any assistance welcomed..Also On the Discovery i used to have (sorry it was my first 4x4 and have nothing else to refer to) the front hubs were originally oil filled then it seem packing them with Grease was the way to go and reccomended by service agents - As my front nearside hub has a small weep of a leak, is the norm to fill these with oil or to pack them with Grease.
