    2004 s3 3L ZD30 GU

    Hey Guys,

I’m running around in a shorty tb42 and love the old girl but thinking of upgrading to a GU y61 or maybe in future a Y62...

A mates going to be selling his GU - it’s a 2004 s3 3L ZD30, completely stock with 200k km on it and been treated very well over its life. Nice rig.

Wondering what you reckon the GU is worth and if you reckon upgrade is worthwhile?

I only use the patrol for camping and with the shorty full length roof rack, don’t need much more space. The GU is just more comfortable for long trips and a diesel

Are you aware of the known common issues with these motors?

    "Thar she blows!"

Has it got the Nissan Anti-Detonation System installed (NADS) If so then maybe consider it. Go NADS!

Talk to the owner about what has been done to the grenade, er, engine and see if he has got receipts.

A compression test and an inspection camera into the bores, inlet manifold and after the turbo might show you some pending problems such as carbon build up etc.

FYI. "NADS" will not stop the inevitable happening. My ZD was NADded 30 thou after it was rebuilt. 150thou later, the Injector pump died, i decided to ditch the motor. The head was taken off and number 4 piston was cracked and ready to pop. So it was just a matter of time. BUT. Then theres plenty of owners who have done 300,000 plus k's on the original motor. Dunno...

Yeah dads ZD has over 400K still still runs perfect, towed all over Aus as well all bog stock apart from boost & EGT guages. . Luck of the draw I guess sure there's plenty out there that have given trouble free motoring but do have a reputation for the potential to go bang. They're a nice car but that shorty looks like a pearler . . . Maybe keep both . . .

I’ve done some reading up on the issues with the ZD30di - yeh. I read about the 4th cyl piston melting! Wow.... but saw they added oil galleries on engines made after 2002 which addresses the issue? Also read about them blowing up but saw that that was on modified engines which were malfunctioning and then overboosting. So to ensure you don’t blow it up, you can keep it stock or if your modifying add the anti granade kit haha.
So yeh, I’m not too worried about the engine as I’ll keep it stock I suspect.
The rest of the rig is a s3 GU which I’ve just read great things about. I like the s4 body better but this rigs in great nick.
Only thing I am honestly doubting is that for 15$k is it worth the money compared to what I have...
    Dunno
The shorty puts a smile on my face and won’t ever die. Is so simple and being petrol, low compression ratios and rpm, so likely to do 1 million km’s with a few heads changes here and there...
    Hmmm

If I do ever sell it I’ll definitely post here before anywhere else.
