Engine rebuild specialist needed!!
Hi,
My first post.
I jist bought my first ever patrol, it's a 98 TI 4.5. I love it.
It does have minimal smoke at start up and some ticking noise(not loud or very noticeable), my mechanic confirmed it's piston rings.
I came here to see if anyone has done them before or can recommend someone in Melbourne.
What costs am i looking at?
Should i jist do the rings or other stuff that i i should do since I'm there?
Would really appreciate anyone's input as I'm new to the 4x4 scene and having a patrol as my first 4x4, i want to to be 100%.
Thanks all.

Welcome to the forum. Usually smoke on start up means worn valve guides and / or valve seals.
What is the compression on each cylinder? Do a compression test. If it is low, then squirt a smidgen of oil ( Not too much, or you might hydrolock the piston) onto the cylinder wall, then do another test. If the compression rises significantly, the rings are stuffed.

Oh yep...if the engine is actually fruited.....maybe a LS chev conversion for the petrol 98 may not be much more expensive than a full rebuild or swap out.
Just a thought.

Thanks for the reply,
I will be doing a compression test on Sat when I'm off work. I did put the stop smoke and it hasn't smoked yet.
What prices am i looking at for a rebuild?
I will post up the compression test results here.
Thanks guys.

The results of the compression test will provide you with the best way to go forward. As to the answer to how much it will cost, shop around. There are Chinese made bare heads for sale, at the lower price range, all the way up to Reconditioned engines. Patrolapart and Engines Plus are the ones I would contact to get a starting price.
