I've done the same with the Carter 4600. When I mounted the pre-filter, I pulled the pump fuse as a test and it drove correctly albeit with new filters and a freshly rebuilt pump and without making excessive demands on fuel. I just wanted to know I could keep going if the pump failed.
There are pumps that will allow fuel through them if they stop working.
