Welcome to the forum Nathan. A bit of info on what you've found might get a bit more feedback. Depends what use you have in mind for one as to what is the best buy. I have only owned a TD42i engined model & consider it was a great choice - best car I've ever owned, reliable & trustworthy, & excellent off road - just what I wanted for remote area touring. Later model 3.0 litre jobbies are cheaper to buy & plenty get a pretty reasonable mileage out of them, but as you are probably aware some of the earlier 3.0's did gain a reputation for going bang & now & then someone posts with a tale of woe, but far less often than the reputation would lead you to expect. Hopefully you'll get a few others here who will be able to tell you about a couple of simple things you can do to prevent this happening, & which particular models created the reputation.

alot of people like the 4.2L simple and reliable but abit slower from what im told

    sounds fair,
things to note on the 3.0L crd engine
the exhaust manifold is common to warp and snap studs. it will cause a squeal under acceleration. fix is replacing the manifold and all the studs.
also the egr pipe around the back of the head can crack and cause the squeal to.
some people mistake if for belt squeal. and the belt tensioners do also fail.

put a oil catch can on it and a 2nd fuel filter for finer filtration.

    thats my 2 cents
    i own a 2008 3.0L crd wagon 205,000km and have it for 4 years and 45,000km

Welcome to the forum. Check the rear spring mounts for cracking and stretching. It is a known fault and there are kits available to prevent and rectify it.
