Question GQ TB42 replace mechanical fuel pump for electrical.

I have a TB42 on dual fuel. Runs great but I don't like the always 'on' mechanical fuel pump - every so often I smell petrol. So bought a terrific electric pump only to be used when on petrol once every two - three weeks.

Just have one doubt: leaving the mechanical fuel pump in and run dry for ever does not sound OK to me .
-- Can I fill it with oil and connect inlet to outlet and let the pump circulate ? Or would that eventually cook the oil and go booom ?
-- Or can I safely remove the mechanical pump and forget about it?

    Thanks !!

Looking at the images for the mechanical pump, it is basically the same oil splash lube as my ol' Fairmont. I just made a metal plate that matched the hole to blank it off. But I hope someone who has done it can set you straight.
