GU Manual reverse light switch location

Hey folks, I have a 2004 GU, TD42 manual.

The reverse light switch is sporadic, only comes on when I wobble the gearstick around while in reverse.

Any hints on location of switch and best way to access it?

I've done a search and established that it is at the top of the gearbox, just wandering how much stuff I have to remove to get to it.

Hey mate, not 100 percent sure but think you'd be able to get to it fron underneath. Worth jumping under and sussing that out first before removing interior if you don't have to. On the left hand side from memory, I think wire runs over top from right to a little plug on a hex shaped thingy. Speedo drive and 4WD switch further back on the transfer.

cheers mate yeah had a look underneath and found it (it's on the drivers side). Can't get any spanner I've got onto it though, looks like a trip to the mechanic

It's not a massive deal to pop the cover off from around the gear stick and have a look from above. Probably only take you 10-15mins and give you pretty reasonable access to the top of the box.

thanks mate yeah I can get to it ok from underneath but getting a spanner onto it is another matter. Might need a custom tool or something.

well I had another look and managed to get a spanner onto it. Removed the switch, cut off the wires that were looking pretty dodgy and re-soldered new ones. Yay, it works. I'll call that a win.

i did mine just by crawling under it nothing had to be removed
i was putting a new sensor in to i cut the wires and put a socket on it cause i wrecked it with a spanner
the socket i used was a kinchrome loc-on one designed to under things that have been rounded worked a treat.
i recon it will be hard to remove without destroying maybe looks at things like pipe spanners, crows foot spanner or a socket meant for removing exhaust oxygen sensors (if they do the right size)

yeah mate 19mm, I got under it and fiddled around with it til I managed to get the open-end spanner on it. Spanner was a bit loose, makes me think maybe it's an imperial size? Anyway, I slowly built up pressure and it cracked. Any more and I reckon I would have rounded it but have to take the win. After that I just unscrewed it by hand. The wires had been almost broken by some unknown past encounter so I cut them off and re-soldered them. Worked a treat and didn't cost me anything. I know a new switch is only $30 but no need to drop that coin if the old one still works.
