    Transmission oil

Looking at replacing transmission and Diff oils. 97GQ with aftermarket turbo used mainly for towing. Any suggestions as what ever they put in it (when the clutch was replaced) seems to get hot and emmit a annoying smell

Have a look in this thread mate:

Obviously make sure transmission etc, matches yours (i.e. not automotic suggested and you have manual, or vice versa, etc)

I use castrol vmx 80 in both my gearbox & transfer case. I tow 2.5t & give it a pounding off road & found this oil to hold up. Also in the cold weather it used to get hydrolic lock out in 2nd Now with the current oil it has no drama's. Penrite limslip 140 in both front & rear diffs. you can use lsd oil in the open front diff with out any dramas but don't use open diff oil in a lsd. In series 11 GQ & on they used atf in the transfer case as gear oil was causing the transfer to engage & with auto hubs that was a bit of a drama on the hwy. If you have changed to manual hubs I can't see why you couldn't use the gear oil in both.

Make sure you can undo the filler plugs on all before you undo the drain plugs & drain the oils out.

The smell in the cab maybe from a worn shifter boot, its a rubber boot on the gearbox under the one that is in the interior. Mine & a mavey I had before done the same thing. was a easy & inexpensive job to fix.

I agree, this is very common on GQ/GU Patrols. The rubber boot is only small and costs about $10 or $15 from Nissan.
