How much psi can RD28T can handle
Hi guys, I have w260 1993 2.8TD original engine and original turbo. I want to connect a intercooler to the original turbo and after that I will hybrid my turbo by changing spinnings. But how much psi can the engine take before blow up ?

Impossible question to answer, somewhere between 15 and 1500PSI at a guess. What condition is the motor, how many klm, how is it driven, how is it maintained, what ambient temps do you have? I think there is a guy in the UK who is a hard core 2.8 Turbo guy - google him. I had that engine in a Y60 - GQ and it ran at 12psi from factory. It spins up smooth and quick but to be honest its a little motor for a big vehicle so I would not be stressing it too much if you want it to last

Unfortunately no. It was recommended to me to change the turbo from the factory unit to a ball bearing unit however I didn't go that way as ended up changing the motor out instead. I think there are a number of options out there from turbine wheel swaps to complete turbo's. The guy in the UK runs a highly modified engine with a pile of strengthening I believe. I doubt you are going to get significant power and longevity out of a straight turbo swap, look at pump and injectors, maybe head works? The mileage would also be a potential area to consider as its getting on. I know this is a mid range mileage for the TD42 engine however think the RD28 probaly does not have the same degree of engineering margin to take high stress. I found blocking the EGR gave me a little bit of lower rpm boost, I upgraded the air filter to the safari snorkle and its big filter box - and ran a re-oil-able K&N filter - this made the biggest leap in performance as the engine could breath, and added a safari intercooler - air to air front mount, it made a little bit of difference performance wise, nothing startling, bang for buck not worth the money, however perhaps a bigger intercooler core would have helped
