    10mm or swap for a unkown 11mm pump question - What would you do?

    Hi All,

    I've done a search and I know the benefits of a boost compensated pump over the standard 10mm.
    But I'm asking a WWYD question. Apologies if this isn't the right section or this has been asked before (please link and close this thread).

    I have a NA TD42, and I am turboing it, p4x4 16g. I have the stock 10mm on now. However, I have a blown td (my friends, everything was running fine before. Bit sooty though) with a boost compensated pump (suspected 11mm) but in unknown condition.
    Unfortunately I do not have to money to turbo and get the pump reconditioned.

    My question is, what would you do?
    Buy the turbo kit and slap it on with the 10mm and sell the BC pump?
    Or
    Buy the turbo kit, swap out the pumps and risk it.
    Are there any other options? Or can I get the pump looked at?

    The thing is, unless you know what that 11mm pump is tuned for there may not be a lot of difference. Yes, you'll have a bit of extra fuel on boost with the compensator.. But that may not be more fuel than what the 10mm pump is putting out.

    When I ordered my 12mm pump the guy asked me what power output I wanted. He told me that he could build an 11mm pump up to a certain power for cheaper than a 12mm pump and that there was zero difference on a dyno between the 2. You only need to go to the bigger plunger for bigger power. That's what the expert reckons anyway.

    So what would I do? Get the 11mm pump tested at the very least. Shouldn't cost you a fortune. If it tests okay then put that one on with the turbo. I wouldn't swap a known good working pump for a gamble just because it has a boost compensator and a bigger plunger.

    Any reputable diesle mechanic should be able to test/recommend someone who can test the pump for you.

    Thanks for your response TJ.

    The trouble is the pump was on a standard silver top, not a turbo so I wouldn't have an idea.

    Ill get the pump tested, called around and its about ~$400 to open it up, check and maybe test. So I might go ahead with that.
