ZD30 CRD need opinions on issues.

    Hi All,

Hoping the more mechanically inclined will be able to help me. I’ve done a heap of searching and think I’ve come to a conclusion but would like a second (or more) opinion.

Have an oil leak getting worse. Don’t know if it coincidence but it seemed to only appear after EGR block, catch can and new Tig welded IC.

I think the oil leak is from the #4 injector seal it even the glow plug. Do I need any specialist tools to replace the seals? Have all the usual hand and power tools.

Also is this normal for the air filter to look like this after about 5000kms?

And would the last picture mean the turbo is leaking oil?

    Thanks heaps for any opinions.

Dumb question mate, but is that oil or diesel ???
Just doesn't look "black" enough to me, but i could be wrong.
Looks like diesel mixed with gunk/dirt... If so, it could be going past the injector washers/seals.

    Hi Hodge,

It’s funny you say that because I thought the same thing today. I had it running and noticed the #4 injector had a clip on it that was rattling. It made me think that something must be loose one there and it could be Diesel. That could explain why its absolutely every where. Would that mean a buggered injector? Or still just a seal?

Not a dumb question at all mate. Cheers.

in my personal experience the oil in the 4th injector area is from the cracked intercooler and the oil drips into #4 injector my zd30 crd did it until i brought a welded intercooler. i read you have one though..
i cant see why only one injector seal would leak, plus i think that yours is CRD meaning the injectors seals are apart of the whole rocker cover and that $$$$ from nissan. dont think non genuine do just a seal either (if anyone know if non gen do let me know )
blocking the egr without dawes valve could be causing higher boost (maybe to be confirmed by others as well) and that might be forcing the oil mist out easier.
air filter looks about right i wouldnt worry on that one, ive been told thats normal, the first part the air contacts ends up really dirty just leave that part facing the opening dont spin it around to a cleaner part.
i also read you have a catch can. what brand? also keep in mind catch cans no matter the brand wont prevent that oil mist from entering the intake 100% but removing even half helps. (is the catch can plumbed in correctly are you finding it catching oil?)

lastly you intake pipes look factory i've seen afew get splits in them i would recommend forefront industries pipes if you have splits as genuine is $$$$$

have a look here and see what fits you car, as Di and CRD have some differences.

Unsure mate. First thing I thought was leaking intercooler but as I read it you have a new welded unit so ... Slim chances of that leaking.

Degrease the whole lot and then keep an eye and see where it's coming from.
If it's fresh diesel it'll.smell like diesel.

Air Filter - common to look like that? Yes... after 5000 K? Nah, looks excessive esp if the EGR is blocked.

The gunk is deposits from Turbo Surge (high pressure charge air surging back thru the Turbo from the Cooler when you back off).
It is essentially the same gunk that weeps out from non-welded intercoolers and induction pipe joints.

When the Turbo is at high boost all the charge air is engine bound but when you back off sharply with a VNT Turbo the Boost drops very quickly.
That boosted air in the I/C and pipes can't all get to the engine now and some flows back thru the turbo towards atmosphere and deposits the gunk on the filter
Dolphins are so smart that within a few weeks of captivity, they can train people to stand on the very edge of the pool and throw them fish.

    Hi 2keen,
How did you go with leak? I have a CRD and have just found that mine is leaking in the same spot. Any advise would a big help.

IMO change the air filter out(it is crap design anyway), remove the ducting from airbox to turbo, give it all a good clean, inspect and re-assemble making sure all joint faces are clean and dry. Then wash down engine clean and observe.

Same here, would be curious how the leak is going as the same thing happened to my CRD at the same spot.
Just yesterday I replaced my intercooler with a new JayRad welded one and haven't had a chance to clean up properly and see how it goes. Will also replace the seals and hopefully that'll fix it.

What you're seeing on the airfilter is pretty normal.

The air supply into the airbox only focuses on a small area. If you don't have a new air filter handy you can rotate it 90-180 degrees so the fresh air blows against a "cleaner" spot.
