    drivers side rattle

    Hi
Im Phil from NZ and have always been a Toyota 4x4 man.
My mate is the same but recently he picked up a couple of swb gq's for himself and his son and he really likes them so I got one as well, (for my son)
Ive done a lot of work to it, sand blasted the gutters which were just starting to lose their paint, wheels /tires, rocker assembly, exhaust manifold and studs, heaps of new switches, injectors, tail lights, water pump, viscus coupling, fan, hoses, belts, and plenty of bodywork, shocks and springs and more.
Now it has a type of rattle that sounds like its coming from the drivers side heater vent.
    Only it isnt.
Ive had the dash completely out and at 100kms the rattle starts.
Ive had the valance off where the wipers are also.
Im starting to think its originating from further forward and travelling up the steering column or maybe the inner gaurd.
I also adjusted the backlash on the steering box as it was shocking, now ok.
Could it be coming from a hub or rota?
It sort of sounds like a dry speedo but of course it isnt.
    Its a non turbo TD42.
There are no loose pipes on the fire wall.
Ive also adjusted the front wheel bearings
The truck has just passed a NZ warrant of fitness except for a faded tail light lens so is reasonably sound.
This rattle has got me stumped
    Cheers for any suggestions

G’day Phil mate, probably no help but recently back in a GQ myself chasing I think a new maybe similar noise. Haven’t started properly searching function here as yet although will be exploring past threads remembered once of things like cracked inner front guard potentials in the model and the like.

    I found it.
    Very very long story short
The rattle was unbearable, the truck was just impossible to drive with this damed rattle.
So we started taking stuff off the truck bit by bit.
Removed the whole dash the wiper valance and the wiper mech and wiper motor.
Packed rags behind all the plumbing on the firewall,
The sound was as if it was in the instrument cluster or slightly to the left of it in the vent.
sounded like a broken speedo cable.
Turned out to be the Bonnet poly carbonate protector
Im still not sure if it was an actual rattle or a wind/harmonics issue but its gone.

    Its a huge relief.
We are almost finished doing the truck up and that rattle was really taking the fun out of the job.

    There's More
    The rattle has a story.
It was associated with the bonnet protector but thats not the beginning of it.
When I got the truck it was missing the passenger side adjustable bonnet button rubber.(at each side front).
Id say it had been missing for a while and this allowed the bonnet to flap (vibrate)
The aerodynamics of the bonnet protector made this vibration worse.
But the real issue was the wear that this vibration was causing in the driver side bonnet hinge.
So even after the rubber support button was replaced and the bonnet protector was removed the rattle was still there sometimes when driving on rough ground.

Seeing this thread jogged my memory. I had similar noises, with a horrible sneaky squeak, back when I first bought my Old Trol. Found the bonnet latch was worn so being a Fish Bum and not shelling out for a new bonnet, I fitted rubber bonnet latches. They are anchored on the grill, so I had to fit thick cable ties to hold the grill to the body. Apart from having to replace perished rubber, they have worked well.

Your reply reminds me of another issue connected to the vibrating bonnet.
The Vibs wore out the bonnet latch loop to a point where it was half cut through.
That latch loop is spot welded into the Bonnet frame.
I was able to tig weld the loop wear though.
I was talking to the girl who owned the truck prior to me and she was saying that it had been a great truck but the bonnet flapped a lot????????
I guess it was no coincidence that the rocker cover was lined in an inch of sludge.

    No that wasnt an issue.
I think what made the rattle so much more irritating was that it was coming from that cavity where the hinge is located and this acted like a echo chamber.
