I've had my 2001 GU patrol wagon (TD4.2 Turbo) for 13yrs and have spent very little keeping it going, but 6 months ago she didn't get us home, got stuck in reverse, so it's been parked up at work. My oldest son has just recently got his Licence (Red P's) manual especially so he can drive the patrol, so getting keen to get her back on the road, he was going to buy his own 4wd but brought himself a Falcon on the arrangement that we could share the Patrol.
We followed a youtube video and got the gearbox out the other weekend, (Engine hoist sling thru the door, then a ratchet strap pull on one side to twist it past the starter motor lump), took the top off, it seems the reverse synchro ring shifts ok but the 5th gear selector is jammed, we'll separate the transfer case and see what is the cause.
I'm reading there was a change Nissan made to the 5th gear in late 2002, I assume they were having issues prior to this, anyone know what I need to look for, I did get a receipt from the previous owner for work he had done to the gearbox ($3500) when it gave out on him while travelling around OZ, I suspect from towing in 5th with the camper trailer in tow and a tinnie on the roof, so is a chance 5th gear may have been upgraded.
Any experience or advice would be much appreciated.
Also feel free to educate me on the use of the forum I'm a total newbie, never used face book or any social media.
