Serious ticking noise - vacume bearing?

    Hi!
gU Turbo patrol, 1995 been ours since near new and well cared for.
So 12 months ago it started pumping water out of over flow, several machanics telling us it was not the head, so we found one who tested it for half hour and found the gas, so we had the head tested and a replacement (recon? One I think)
So we have drove it for the last month, on morning starts white/grey smoke , which it never did before. Took it back for a check and they said 4 out of 6 glow plugs had blown.
Ok, so they replaced them and broke one off!
So after a day in the shop, they said it’s fixed and everything else looks good, drove it out and now it has a very loud ticking sound that goes up and down with the revs. So we called machanic and he said he thought the bearing in the vacumn pump might be going, and to bring it back next week.

Why would it suddenly go now, is that possible?
And what else could the noise be?
They said they got the broken glow plug out...
