does the auto trans really need its own cooler, plus the radiator ?
I was thinking of replacing the radiator. Bit more thinking,,,,, Hm might add separate cooler for the A/T rather than loading up the radiator with extra heat.
Then while looking at the existing plumbing I realised it does have its own cooler infront of all the other radiators then it goes into the bottom of the radiator as is often the setup without a separate cooler.
Is this really needed, or could I just buy a manual transmission radiator and just plumb A/T to its own existing cooler.????
Is the original set up a double kill incase of extra heavy towing, ???
Any thoughts Please

I personally prefer to remove the trans fluid cooler in the radiator. That eliminates any risk of the tube fracturing and passing coolant into the trans.
It’s a trans rebuild if it happens.
I run a Davies Craig 679 in series with the stock TB45 trans cooler which, btw, is about half the size of the ZD30 cooler.
A trans temp gauge is also a good investment.

One of the reasons the Trans Fluid is passed thru the Rad is for temp stability, another is in colder climes you want the tranny fluid 'warmed up' more quickly by the engine coolant than just the tranny load.
Either way, if you bypass the Rad I would def invest in a Tranny Temp Gauge.
FWIW I have always monitored Tranny temp on my TB, Chevy 6.5 and now my Y62... was definitely needed on the Chev but was more peace of mind on the others

It works great. Have towed in convoy with a number of different vehicle makes over the years. Have seen a number with A/T overt heating problems but never an auto Patrol.Why change a good thing?

As freezing as it currently gets here in Victoria’s lower high country start. Soon enough it’ll hit 45C+ up serious top and blokes torque converter fluidy things will need assistance hot slow driving.
EDIT: Only happens to Lancruisers :-)

Bumping an old thread...
So my GU TB48 5spd auto has gone through a heap of oil, started not selecting D when moving off from a stop.. Topped up the fluid and its running a-lot better...BUT....have noted that I have milking coolant in my radiator and overflow.
Car isn't running hot but I've been informed that the two issues are linked.
Namely a transmission cooler that is linked to the radiator could well be shot. Appaently this isnt a good think to keep driving around with, so Im keen to get it resolved.
Do I need an Auto transmission specialist, or a radiator specialist or a Nissan specialist?
I'm in Fremantle/Perth WA. (Help... :-))

A new radiator and coolant flush should do the trick. As long as the transmission fluid hasn't been contaminated. The extra cooler is for shedding heat while towing.
My advice is: not to follow my advice.

Ive opted for a new radiator, the main unit, as I believe that where the failure is...?
So the A/T trans fluid runs through the radiator, in some fashion?
