Hey Phil, were do you get bottles recertified? I've got a bottle, the shape of which I've never seen anywhere, it is old, at least 30, maybe closer to 40 years.

I just rang the supplier of the my bottles, Speedigas in NSW. They distribute from NSW. They said the bottles have an expiry date, waiting for a return call on what that is, however because they only do a gas bottle exchange process, the bottle you buy has already been retested and certified each time its refilled by them. the manufacture date must trigger some internal company processes to then do further thickness testing after some period, say 10 yrs , at a guess. They did however clear up a discrepancy re the gas bottle ownership program in that I cannot get that bottle specifically refilled as they don't have a refill facility in VIC, all their bottles get refilled and tested in NSW, trucking back and forth across the country.

I asked about the process of exchange or retesting of any gas bottle, and they only would accept a Speedigas bottle on an exchange program. If its from one of the other 4 gas suppliers, elgas, boc etc, they would likely take the bottle as an exchange, and then carry the risk of it being servicable or not, or reject it outright and refuse to swap it. i think I would simply ring around and find the right person to clarify the test process. It wasn't that difficult, but the cost is the new valve head, visual internal inspection and then if they hydrotest it or not or ultrasonic thickness testing - each probably has their own process. i will revert when I have details on the perceived life of a bottle, but for unfired pressure vessels, its a combination of wall thickness and wall thickness degradation over time and thats about it - if the wall thickness falls within the guidelines and it holds pressure, good to go. I think you might have to take one on a rental program, but could be wrong. At a minimum I would spruce it up a bit before swapping it out!

And here you can only write about the tool that you bought or you can show the tool that you made yourself?

    RivNuts/NutSerts rock you’ll love em
Just be a wee bit careful on the high quality 304HC stainless ones, the Kinchrome tool kit may break a handle if your hole size isn’t exactly to spec or slightly greater as they’re a lot tougher them stainless ripper serts Mick kindly suggested
