Intermittent power loss

Hi All- I have a '06 GU 3.0l turbo diesel that occasionally loses power when revving over 2700rpm. Did once 2 years ago then nothing for about 1 1/2 years then did it again using about 1l oil in 30 minutes and now getting more frequent. When it used the oil it was cruising on open highway. I stopped cleaned up the oil topped up the oil let the engine cool down and drove perfectly fine with nothing happening again for about 4 months. Didn't use a drop of oil in that 4 months either. No warning lights come on but doesn't stop until I switch it off and let it cool down. Anyone else have this problem or know how to fix it?
