    Squeak after engine turned off

    Hi Folks,
    I have a 2012 3.0l diesel Patrol.
It makes a fairly loud squeaking noise after the engine is turned off.
Something like "eee-arrr". It makes this noise about 4 times after the engine is turned off.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    Kirk

Just a thought... Could it be the EGR valve trying to close or open? It could be faulty or stuck.
They go to a default state when motor is shut down. I can't remember whether open or shut.

    Thanks Hodge.
I forgot to mention that the noise goes on for several seconds after the engine is turned off. Sometimes it is still going after I've got out of the vehicle.

The only noise mine makes after turning off is the radio aerial retracting.

Could this be a small vacuum leak, equalising once the car is off and vacuum is not being generated - cracked hose?

My crd used to do exactly the same.
Motor off get out of car and I can hear a small whirl and something attempting to close or open.
Usually went on for good 2-3 seconds unless engine was very cold.
It turned out to be the EGR valve replaced by Nissan. Walls around the butterfly flap inside the valve were caked in EGR gunk and flap wasn't closing properly.

But ... Could be something else.
4bye4 made a good point is it the aerial retracting and making a squeal...

The egr piping has a tendancey to split on the later models.
maybe block the egr with a special SS plate

I used a great diagnostic tool, the radio. I turned it off for a couple of days, and am faily sure I hear the same pitched sqeek when I put my foot on the clutch.

    Thanks for the tip 4bye4.
I discovered that my aerial was indeed stuck so I loosened it up with some RP7. But I’m guessing my model doesn’t have a retractable aerial because it doesn’t move of its own accord.

    Thanks PeeBee.
I hope you’re right. Better to replace a hose than some expensive other repair.

Thanks Hodge for the EGR valve info. Sounds like a possibility considering that the noise continues after the engine is off.

threedogs, are you suggesting the EGR isn't essential and I can just block it off?

The EGR is essential in earlier engine death. Other than that, they are not needed on any diesel engine. Just a legal requirement thats all...

I took the vehicle to the mechanic, and it was indeed the EGR. Thanks everyone.
