Doolans Plains - Vic High Country

Missed out on Licola trip this year, but headed out with my brother to the Howitt High plains for some snow camping. Weather ws magnificent, minus 5 during the night, clear sky and no wind, 16 - 20 deg during the day, clear sky, no wind and at times too hot to sit in the sun!

Snow was around the 750mm deep, but wet, claggy and very difficult to drive thru - got stuck up to the belly at one point and needed a winch out. Beautiful and quiet, only saw 3 other vehicles all weekend. Gwendolyn came out on saturday night for a spicy beef meal - magnificent. Reckon the snow will be around for a few more weeks at that depth if you want to play. We were at 1480m, and the Gorge Carpark where the Licola group had a play is higher than that.DSC02117.JPGDSC02117.JPGDSC02110.JPGDSC02115.JPG

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever.
WARNING: Towballs used for recoveries can, and do kill people and damage property.

It was 'one out of the box' for sure. Nil traffic, there and back until pretty close to melb, just have to set my tent up next time about 3klm from the brother as he snores like a herd of wilderbeast. Weather is looking like a big dump next thursday, so get out there and let your hair down!

Ross, the snow was at least 750mm deep off the track and 600mm on the track, I bottomed out on the floorpan at one point as the car sunk and could not find anything to grip on. A number of times I was dragging the diffs on the center hump of the main Howitt Rd - like for klm's - and that same road reminded me of a simpson desert crossing where the dunes get chewed up. in a rocking pattern and the car simply starts bouncing and rocking back and forth, can't do anything, slow down and you stop, keep going and it seems to get worse. Harvesting wood was the greatest pain as you had to wade thru the snow to the timber, fell it then drag it back to the track, hard work.
The frozen lake next to the camp was crazy, we managed to finally punch a hole thru the surface with a rock and it was a good 2" thick.
