bought a turbo from speed up auto parts 3 years back, done 100k on it and its shit itself, is this normal guys?
gets serviced every 10k with good oils and filters, always warm up and cool down before and after driving her.
    its a TD42 with a HT18 turbocharger.
    thanks guys!

Only ever had HT18’s on our near stocky work TD42’s mate. Fingers crossed never had to replace one yet on vehicles pushing ever closer to 500,000km.

So is this a water cooled unit ?
I have 800,000kms on my old rodeo 2.8 turbo and still going !
Its not as good as it once was but still original . replaced the fuel pump about 60,000km ago .. and change the injectors about every 60,000 kms oil every 5,000kms .
one of the best cars I have ever owned , front mount intercooler when new !

Our HT18’s are water & oil cooled I believe Tip12345 mate (circa 1999-2001). Just done some googling for Terry and see that later models may have been oil only?

It's definatly not normal. But lets be honest, Personally I think your engine is not treated very well at all.
You've doubled your service intervals. Irrespective of what oil you use, It's still a dirty indirect injected diesel that's now serviced at half the amount it should be. Also you let it idle to warm up. A TD is a massive lump of cast iron. It takes a long time to get to to operating temp (not just water temp), meaning a long time for the engine to be running where clearances aren't to spec. The best way to warm an engine is to just drive it get it to temp as quick as possible. Dont flog the piss out it or lug/labour it. Just drive normally.

From what little information has been given regarding the failure. My first thought on what info has been given is that you may have a sludged up engine and a bit of that sludge has partially or fully blocked the oil line to the turbo. More than happy to be wrong though. Could be a genuine faulty unit.

Great to learn honestly Ben mate, we’re fortunate enough to motor on steep down hill 10kms after fast startup. One family TD42T stocky (3” exhaust/tune) still gets a bit of my ‘slackarse’ abuse unfortunately with 10k sometimes + services and still chugging on the good old gal :-)

Almost forgot, FWIW Japan used to flog off heaps of our beloved TD42 motors with HT18’s to China when done with and almost every 20T+ excavator I’ve seen in the back blocks runs em there to this day with horrible servicing:-( Great donk, fair turbo :-)
