Sub Tank emptying by inself.
Hello all.
I have a 2003 intercooled 4.2 DX ute.
I have an issue whereby after filling both tanks, the main tank starts to be use, but by 1/2 tank the sub-tank starts to empty into the main tank. This happens without the pump being turned on. I can only assume that it is siphoning through. It was about 25 liters this last fill up. Has anybody else had this problem?
Regards

The Sub Tank Pump will turn on for about 10 seconds every time you turn the key to start your truck, to make sure everything is in working order for when you need it.
If you are doing a fair bit of key stop / start, then that would explain it.
For normal type driving though, it should only empty the top few litres out of the sub tank.

The sub tank controller does this at every start. It will pump fuel from the sub to the main as apart of the startup checks. So if you are starting a lot then it will show on the gauge. I sometimes use to nearly have a quarter transferred over multiple start ups.

I am he, fear me
It is supposed to do that.
If there is fuel in the Sub and the main is less than 3/4 full, every time you start the car the Sub Tank Computer will pump a litre or so of fuel as part of it's self test.
Its just a 'Patrol Thing"

When you take off your fuel cap to the main tank is there Vacuum behind the cap? I had this issue when i was travelling the Outback. I had fitted a Long range tank and had mixed the breathers up. Make sure your tank breather is working as mine appeared to create enough vacuum to suck out of the sub. My sub got to half full.
If it is sucking heaps and you have vacuum behind the cap maybe drive with the cap in loose and see if it continues.

The only good thing about an 80 series is..... the front end?? Wrong!!, the Engine?? Wrong!! the Full Time 4WD system?? Wrong!! Its the NissanPatrol.com.au stubby holder fitted over the transfer lever.
