Most of the time the water from the Lagoon washout is inland freshwater (coloured black from tree contaminents), then as the tide comes in, it pushes the fresh water back, and the washout turns clearer with sea water.
Look at the colour of water and also tide hights, between pic's 2 & 3, they show what i mean quite well.
The "Swimmers" in those pics are also very much to blame for there proximity to the cars (actually much more so than car drivers), they all knew where 99% of cars crossed, and had heaps of room in other parts , but still got as close to the crossing as posable to get the "best" spot, then egged the drivers on telling them to go for it !
