    GQ TB42 Buying advice

    Hey Guys,

my 4WD passion has just been awakened after an off-road trip in a patrol.

I stumbled upon a (Feb)1992 GQ with a 4.2l petrol engine, automatic transmission, with ~315k km on it.

I have already done a bit of reading in this forum and tried to get a general overview of the patrol market, but since I am quite new to this area and stuff like that quickly leads me off the rational path, I kindly wanted to ask wether you could tell me if that's overpriced, considering that the current owner said:

    -
The gear box is over full with oil, so the gear box is a bit sluggish.
The truck is running rough in general because it needs spark plugs and leads
No rego or rwc (rwc apparently manageable for 100$)

    +
    new timing belt
    new tires
    new exhaust system
    rear low slip differential
    Diff breathers
Dual battery with isolator set up
    New battery
    Snorkel
    4 spotties
    Roof rack
    (33" tyres, new spare)

    Price asked for is 6,500$

Any tips or information are/is greatly appreciated, thank you very much in advance!

(Please move if I have chosen the wrong area to post this)

    Sounds suss...

Tell them to drain the excess Gear Box oil (I bet the Tranny is still the same).
Tell them to change the leads and plugs if that is all that the engine needs.
Tell them you'll happily pay $100 for a RWC... IF... all the above comes good.

6500 for an Efi I would consider but IMHO that is too much for a 92 Carby with a dodgy Gearbox and Motor
Carby is Series 1 and Efi is the Series 2 and has a better setup Auto box... I wouldn't buy a Carby TB42 myself

Dolphins are so smart that within a few weeks of captivity, they can train people to stand on the very edge of the pool and throw them fish.

Didn't think the TB42 had timing belts, chain yes but not a belt.

Personally 6500 for a 92 TB42 with 300+ k's and no rwc is a bit steep..... Walk away and keep looking is what I'd do. Plenty of good examples out there for that price...... Oh and the TB42 EFi came out in 93 I believe and would be my pick of those 2 petrols.

Can't believe they've added the limited slip diff bit as though it's a thing they've added , walk away and find another there are better buys out there.

    Mines a January 92 EFI @Clunk

I agree with @the evil twin on the gearbox, I'd put money on it been the same. Iif the gearbox has never been touched its probably got worn clutch plates...... and trust me 2 rebuild a GQ gearbox will cost you about half of they are asking for

If your willing 2 spend 6.5k on a TB i'd seriously consider holding off a bit longer and spending the money on a TD42
Time is never wasted when your wasted all the time

    Fellas,
your opinions are highly appreciated. Even though he dropped the price to 4500$ it feels like it could be a money grave and I feel safer backing off this deal.

Don't blame the seller. We don't know whether he just posted that LSD as an information on how the car is equipped in general. Also, he just said "new timing" and I added the "belt" due to my lack of insider knowledge ;-)

    Thank you all a lot!

If they easily dropped 2k on price I dare say they knew it had issues and backing away is a good call
