Thumbs up TB42 to TD42 transplant

G'day, i inherited my Dads1993 TD42 turbo, it had boat lifter rack and the roof is full of rust and its eating into the two rear sliding windows at the top, considered my options and scored a grandpa spec 1992 TB42 for $2500 and had it flatopped to my partners place (she has two double garages and a big concrete area) for another $250.

ive read an excellent post on here by Andyh on his conversion, great post andy, heaps of info The TD42 is a very reliable bus and runs very well, the TB42 spat a welsh plug and cooked the motor but everything works.

so plan is to strip out what isnt needed in the TB42 and get it ready for transplant, (selling the duel fuel system, reasonably new exhaust system, ECU, etc etc) both cars are autos and from what ive read my diesel will fit straight in, the diesel fuel tanks and plumbing will have top be taken out and transplanted as well, and the wiring loom and dash pod.

dads old gq shell will be for sale to.

    so on with the planning

I cant give you any advice on the conversion mate. But good luck. You have the donor car so theres no much else you would need to buy.

Thanks mudski, yep having the donor makes it cheaper, I can cut wiring loom sections out and graft them in, lots of posts on here exolaining how others have done it so should be ok 👍🍻

Hey mate did a conversion on mine years ago, don't regret it the best thing I've done to it. Very straightforward really, I didn't end up putting a loom in just the cluster and adapted the loom, also just put in an aftermarket glow plug timer which works well.

Also just put a new cab on mine which was same colour as the red & gold one out of interest sake . . .

Hi Rossco, I'm looking forward to driving the new bus, I'd love to know which part of the wiring you changed 👍

Hey mate you'll love the bus i recon.

There wasn't too much in the way of wiring had to change. Just extended alternator wiring across to the other side of the motor, starter, oil pressure, coolant temp all hook up again. Took ignition power from solenoid on carby to plug into injector pump fuel cut solenoid. Tacho I didn't do myself got patrolapart to do it but you need the td cluster and run a wire straight to the taco sensor in the motor. Not sure what pin you need to pick up think GQ Jett sussed that out with his. Originally had manual glow plugs but put in a Bogaart timer now which works great. Apart from the water sensor in the fuel filter everything works and looks factory.

So Im set up to do the change over this week, just called an engineer in Geelong and he has suggested asking if anyone has had issues with vehicle exhaust emmisions? during a TB42 to TD42 change over? and who has had theirs done and where?

Can't see the problem with emissions mate unless you're not running a muffler , as long as you swap everything over the only difference is the body swap .
Interested to know if it's a factory auto or original .
